OMG, are you ready to eat your way through the most delicious streets in Mexico?! If you’re staying in one of our favorite spots in Old Town, you aren't just booking a place to sleep: you’re basically checking into the taco capital of the world! Seriously, the food scene here is UNREAL, and if you aren't hitting up the local stands, you are totally missing out on the soul of the city.
We know the fancy restaurants on the Malecón are tempting, but the real magic happens on the street corners where the steam is rising, the salsas are spicy, and the tortillas are handmade right in front of you. Today, we’re sharing our absolute favorite "hidden gems" that the locals keep secret. These are the spots where we go when we want the real-deal, mouth-watering, "I-need-five-more" tacos.
And the best part? These are all just a short stroll from our rental properties in puerto vallarta. Whether you’re coming from a morning yoga session or just rolling out of bed, taco heaven is waiting!

1. Taqueria Mendoza (The Pastor Powerhouse!)
Located right outside Farmacia Guadalajara on Insurgentes, this is hands-down one of the best spots for Al Pastor. You’ll see the giant trompo (the spinning spit of marinated pork) glowing under the lights. The guys here move SOOO fast, slicing thin ribbons of pork and flicking a piece of pineapple from the top of the spit straight into the taco. It’s like a delicious dance! The quesadillas de adobada here are also legendary. It’s the perfect first stop on a taco crawl.
2. Taqueria Hormiga (The Neighboring Rival)
Literally right next to Mendoza is Taqueria Hormiga. Locals are fiercely loyal to one or the other, and honestly, you have to try both to pick a side! Hormiga opens mid-afternoon and stays hopping late into the night. Their Al Pastor has a slightly different spice blend that is just perfection. Pro tip: Don’t be shy with the lime!
3. Taqueria El Moreno (The Birria King)
If you haven't had birria yet, prepare to have your life changed! Located at Calle Madero and Constitucion, El Moreno specializes in spicy, slow-stewed beef or goat. The meat is so tender it basically melts, and the handmade thick tortillas are the perfect vessel for all that flavor. You can get them as tacos or in a bowl with plenty of consomé (the broth). It’s the ultimate "comfort food" of Puerto Vallarta!
4. Carnitas Taco Stand (The Afternoon Delight)
Located at the corner of Cardenas and Aguacate, this stand is a local legend for afternoon snacks. They specialize in carnitas: tender, juicy pork cooked in its own fat until it's crispy on the edges. They also serve the freshest horchata in town, which is the perfect way to cool down your palate after trying their spicy salsas.

5. Mariscos Cisneros (Seafood Paradise)
You cannot visit PV without getting into the seafood scene! Tucked away on Aguacate between Cardenas and Carranza, Mariscos Cisneros is a total gem. While they have a sit-down area, their taco stand is where the action is. You MUST try the tacos de camaron con queso (shrimp with cheese). The combination of the smoky grill and the melted cheese is mind-blowing! They usually close around 8:00 PM, so make sure to get there for a late lunch or early dinner.
6. La Hormiga Feliz (The Late Night Hero)
Outside the Oxxo at Calle Madero and Vallarta, you’ll find "The Happy Ant." This spot doesn’t even wake up until the sun goes down, but once it does, it’s the place to be! They serve all the classics: asada, pastor, and adobada. It’s the perfect stop after a few margaritas while you're exploring the nightlife. The vibe is always high energy and super friendly!
7. Takos Flako (The Spicy One!)
Just diagonal from La Hormiga Feliz is Takos Flako. This is a very local spot with a super welcoming atmosphere. A quick warning: their salsa is NOT for the faint of heart! It is spicy with a capital S. But if you love a good kick, this is your place. It’s a great spot to sit, people-watch, and feel like you’re truly part of the neighborhood.

8. Tacos Huichos (Family-Run Excellence)
If you want to support a local family and eat like royalty, head to Tacos Huichos. This is a neighborhood favorite that uses traditional marinades that have likely been passed down through generations. The Al Pastor here is marinated to perfection. It’s a bit more "off the beaten path" for tourists, which makes it even better in our book!
9. El Carboncito (Charcoal Flavor)
Another resident favorite is El Carboncito. As the name suggests, they lean into that smoky, charcoal-grilled flavor that makes Mexican street food so distinct. The smell of the grill will lead you there from blocks away! It’s simple, authentic, and consistently delicious.
10. Joe Jack's (The Fish Taco Legend)
While mostly known as a restaurant, their fish tacos are so iconic they deserve a spot on every "best of" list. If you’re taking a break from the meat-heavy stands, Joe Jack’s offers a fresh, crunchy, and absolutely delicious alternative. It's a bit more "upscale" than a street stand, but the flavors are 100% Puerto Vallarta.

Living Like a Local in Old Town
Staying in Old Town is the only way to truly experience the magic of this city. When you stay at our puerto vallarta condo house rentals, you’re right in the heart of the action. You can spend your morning wondering " Sunrise or Sunset? " because honestly, the views from our balconies are incredible at any hour.
After you’ve had your fill of tacos, you can take a leisurely stroll. If you’re coming from the Amapas area, it’s just a 10–15 minute walk to Los Muertos Beach, where you can walk off those delicious calories while the waves crash at your feet. Why Street Tacos?
You might be wondering, "Is it safe?" or "Why not just eat at the hotel?" Let us tell you: the street food culture here is about community. It’s about the family who has been running the same stand for 20 years. It’s about the secret salsa recipe that only grandma knows. When you eat at these stands, you aren't just a tourist; you’re a guest in their neighborhood.
The ingredients are fresh, the turnover is high (which means the food is always coming right off the grill), and the experience is something you’ll be talking about for years. There is nothing like standing on a sidewalk, napkins in hand, lime juice dripping down your fingers, and realizing you just had the best meal of your life!

Your Taco Itinerary
If you’re feeling ambitious, we recommend a "Taco Crawl." Start at one end of Old Town near the farmacia and work your way through. Grab one or two tacos at each spot, try the different salsas, and see which one becomes your personal favorite.
Don't forget to try the aguas frescas (fresh fruit waters) like jamaica or horchata to balance out the spice. And always, always say "Gracias" to the hard-working taqueros who make the magic happen!
We are SOOO excited for you to experience the flavors of Puerto Vallarta. It’s more than just food; it’s a vibe, a feeling, and a whole lot of love on a tortilla. See you at the stands!
